Interview: The man behind the Mustache
Through our connections to the Mustache Bar, Niklas was able to sit down with the owner and ask some questions about the Bar, Bangkok and the lifestyle.
Where are you from?
Never say "Hi" in Germany? Hi, Nilkas, I'm Olivier from Belgium - Brussels Capital. Staying in Bangkok now since 10 years.
When did you open the Mustache Bar?
I opened Mustache 3 years ago. It was simply a restaurant and the police authorized me to open until 6 AM. So after dinner, we moved the tables and people started to dance with House DJs.
Which song would you choose to play, when entering a boxing ring?
Benny Hill?
What inspired you to combine a restaurant (La bella pizzeria) and a Techno club?
I tried everything to bring people earlier, with drink promotions, DJs, etc. But the only thing that worked was FOOD. So I decided to do a pizzeria on the rooftop, a sale booth at the entrance for ravers and a delivery service.
Cats or Dogs?
Monkeys or Humans?
How did you get in touch with the Techno scene?
When I was 16 years old, I started to party in Brussels in a Techno club called "FUSE", with my friends. Then also on free parties, organized in Belgiun in different spots, but not in clubs. It was super underground, under bridges or in parks and metro stations. All illegally. The called in "Raves" in France in that time.
When on vacation: relaxing or adventure?
Once every month or two, I leave Bangkok and go to a beach. I like to go to Kho Samet and relax my mind, away from the city, clubs and noisy places. If I don't have the time for that, I go to a spa and relax in the sauna, the pool and get a massage with happy ending.
What does the Techno scene look like in Bangkok?
The first Techno event I found after, living here for 5 years already, was "Underground Circus" with Dan Buri, Sunjy and Boris Rubin at the "GLOW". Then Live RCA opened Mustache, Beam and Dark Bar.
Are drugs a factor in the scene?
Drugs? What is that? I don't know what you are talking about.
How do you manage with the local police?
Long story, I can't go into detail, let's just say: the police is making a lot of money every month with clubs in Bangkok. They are like cockroaches.
Belgium or Thailand?
Belgium during the summer time. Terrace, food and outdoor festivals are better then in Thailand. But Thailand during winter time. I don't like the cold and the rain. In Belgium it can rain for two weeks, here it rains strongly for 10 minutes and after another 10 minutes everything is dry again.
Regardless if dead or alive, which person would you like to meet once?
Dead or alive, let's say GOD!
Where do you see Mustache Bar in 5 years?
I think in 5 years someone else will takeover Mustache. I'm starting to get tired of the nightlife. I'm getting too old and I want to concentrate on special outdoor events on daytime and festivals.
What is your greatest strength?
Determination and get things going. I never stop, even if I make a mistake I'll find another way to success.
Where do you see your weaknesses?
Impatience, trying to get things done fast and then do something wrong. Sitting down, thinking and doing things step by step could give better results.
Thank you very much, see you for the next drink!
